Walking the streets of Virginia City, you might see a few cowboys and cowgirls, you might even see a prospector and burrow, but what you'll definitely see plenty of, is horsepower -- the 4-wheel variety.
The 2015 Hot August Nights event, which began its two-day kickoff in Virginia City and then will continue on to Reno-Sparks for another eight days of cruises, Show-n-Shines, Drag Races, Burnouts, and an autocross, is in its 29th year of celebrating the classic car. Open to all 1976 and older vehicles, this year more than 6,000 classic rides are expected to be seen motoring through the streets of Reno and its surrounding cities. Here are some of the key dates of the event.
One of the highlights of Hot August Nights is the Barrett-Jackson Cup, now in its 3rd year in Reno. The largest prize purse of any collector car competition in the world, the Barrett-Jackson Cup offers winners more than $100,000 in cash and prizes. A total of 25 vehicles will be chosen from the downtown Reno Show-n-Shines to compete for the Cup. Selections will be made by renowned judges, including Bobby Alloway, Pete Chapouris, and Bob Millard, and the these vehicles will be on display at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on Saturday. At the close of Barrett-Jackson's auction, which is held at the Convention Center, the five finalists, also known as the "Reno Five," and the Ultimate Best of Show winner will be announced. The Best of Show winner is one of the most coveted awards in the collector car hobby, and with prizes this year totaling almost $60,000 ($30,000 in cash), there isn't any wonder.
