Car Auction Price Comparison – 2019 Versus 2020

Here’s a look at average prices for selected Blue Chip collector cars between 2019 and 2020 based on sales results from several major auction companies. There may be expectations for other types of classic cars, but of the 22 vehicles in this study, the market trend was that car prices were almost entirely on the rise for 2020. This is somewhat of a surprise, considering the COVID-related challenges the hobby faced in 2020.

- The selection of the above 22 vehicles was made to evaluate blue chip collectibles that are typically restored to high levels of originality with minimal differences in options (i.e. cars that are inherently alike).
- Every effort was made to select similar vehicles for comparison, recognizing that many factors affect pricing. In addition to year and model type, drivetrains and body type (i.e. coupe or convertible) were considered when selecting a particular vehicle. Also, to the best extent possible, judging from the vehicle description and photo, only those considered to be “show quality” were utilized in this evaluation to avoid skewing the average price with different condition levels.
- Vehicles that have been customized or restomoded and those with a rarity factor were not included in this evaluation.
- For each of the vehicles evaluated, an attempt was made to locate at least 4 auction sale prices in 2019 and separately in 2020. In most cases 5 prices were located. The prices listed above are an average of all sale prices located for that particular vehicle.
- Note that all prices include buyer’s commission which varies from 8 to 10% above the hammer price.
