It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  Such is the case of a recently completed hot rod pickup called the “California Kid Express.”  It is a labor of love by its owner/builder, Bill Paul of Burgrus, KS.  The truck is patterned after a hot rod coupe built by Pete and Jake’s Hot Rod Parts in 1974, 50 years ago.  The coupe itself is a celebrity in the hobby, having graced the cover of Rod and Custom magazine, BITD, as well as starring alongside Martin Sheen in the 1974 made for TV movie, “The California Kid.”   At the 2024 NSRA Nationals, Jason Slover, manager of Pete and Jakes Hot Rod Parts, and Bill Paul told us the history and details about these iconic builds.
